A (self imposed) James Stewart overdose

9:14 AM

That's it, I've had it with lame movies. You know you've reached a cinematic rock bottom when you're watching What Women Want just because, hey, Mel Gibson is in it.

So now I'm focusing on classics, because you can't go wrong with them. And one of my favorite classic actors is James Stewart. I discovered he made over 90 movies and I've only seen a couple of them. I figured, why not go through his whole filmography? That will help me when I can't find anything good to watch.

The movies I’ve already seen are:

Wife X Secretary
You can’t take it with you
Rope
The greatest show on Earth
Rear Window
Vertigo

I'm planning to watch next:

The man who knew too much
The man who shot liberty valance
The big sleep
Anatomy of a murder
It’s a wonderful life (I'm the only person on Earth who hasn't seen this)

I’m still summoning the courage to watch his westerns. It's not just because I don't like westerns. He doesn't seem to belong in them too. I mean, put down the gun, Jimmy!

December is the perfect time for a James Stewart marathon. Take a look at these titles: Small Town Girl, Seventh Heaven, The Shopworn Angel, You gotta stay happy... There's just no limit to his goody-goodyness.

What are your favorite (and not so favorite) James Stewart movies?

    1. Yay, another fan! I'll look up Harvey, I hadn't heard about this movie before and it seems so unusual! I also like his Hitchcock films, specially Rope and Vertigo. xx

  2. Wow, I had no idea he was in so many films. Sadly, I can only remember seeing him in It's a Wonderful Life. But now I really want to see The Shop Around the Corner. Thank you :)

    1. Me neither, it was a big surprise to see he had such a long career. I guess It's a Wonderful Life is what's he's most know for. That and Vertigo. I hope you like it, it's the most charming movie ever, definitely one of my favorites. xx

  3. See "It's a wonderful life" is one of the movies I would take to a desert island. I've already seen "Rope" and "The rear window" and they are great movies. There's one called "Shenandoah", about a farmer (J.S)and his family. There was a scene about a soldier that kills the son of the family and rape the girl, but it is not shown, they just give you a hint of what's happening. Had trouble sleeping for a day or two ... "Rope" is a small masterpiece. Just almanac information: James Stewart was "following" Lindbergh's flight with a "model" of the Earth and the "Spirit of St. Louis". And he went to WW II.

  4. Oh my, Shenandoah seems intense. It could be a good introduction to his westerns. I knew Stewart fought during the War but not this other thing about Lindbergh. I love reading about his biography, he's so interesting! xx

  5. I don't think Stewart was in The Big Sleep, was he?

Off-hand I'd say my favorite Stewart films are The Shop Around the Corner, Rear Window, Bell Book and Candle, and Dear Brigitte. Enjoy your festival!

  6. Hi Ruth, actually he was in the 78' Big Sleep with Robert Mitchum, not in the 46' version with Humphrey Bogart. I must check the last titles you mention I don't know much about them. But I love The Shop around the Corner - I'm going to put it on my Christmas playlist. xx
